In today’s busy and hectic lifestyles most of us are struggling to keep up with our daily household chores. It is not easy to dedicate a whole weekend to clean your home in a thorough manner. A house which looks clean but is actually not so clean becomes a nourishing place for pests and insects. Which is highly unhygienic. We must understand that our house cannot be thoroughly clean until all hidden spots are cleaned and sanitized. When
cleaning your home many people get puzzled about where to start. For that we have compiled an ultimate deep cleaning checklist that will help & guide you through the process. Considering you have just the weekend and there is a lot of work to put into your home, this deep cleaning checklist will keep you on the right track.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DEEP CLEAN YOUR HOME?
This is an important question, before we start, you must know how often you should be deep cleaning your appliances and furnishings to keep your house clean and hygienic.
- Stovetop: Every week (or as needed)
- Microwave: Every week (or as needed)
- Showers and toilet: Every week
- Carpets and tile floors: Every week
- Windows: Every two weeks
- Light fixtures and fans: Every two weeks
- Cabinets: Every month
- Refrigerator: Every month
- Oven: Every two months
- Pillows, Curtains & Beddings: Every three months
Now the easiest way is to divide the list into different areas like kitchen, bathrooms and bedroom. Next is to prioritize each area as per the need. We have compiled the list in a similar fashion to help make the task easier for you.
KITCHEN
A clean kitchen plays a vital role in your family’s health. This is the reason that kitchen is the most important area to begin with.
MICROWAVE
The most used appliance around the house is the Microwave. This means that it needs frequent and regular cleaning. Different kinds of foods going in the microwave leave stains and bad odors over time. Microwave a half filled cup of water with lemon slices for 3 minutes to get rid of stubborn stains and bad odor. Let it rest for a few minutes and let the steam do its work to losen up all the grease inside. After a few minutes take out the cup and the removable turntable inside and wipe all the grease easily. Wash the turntable thoroughly with running water.
STOVETOP
Cleaning a stove top depends on how frequently it is being used. In a family home, stove tops are used a number of times a day. So they need to be cleaned regularly every day or else the grease will make tough marks on the steel. Use baking soda with vinegar for a thorough sparkling clean surface. This will also get rid of any burn barks.
CABINETS
Cleaning your kitchen cabinet not just involves cleaning the shelves but also the content of the shelves. It is recommended that you empty all the cabinets in your kitchen and thoroughly clean them inside and out every month. Also go through the content so that you can discard any expired items and replace them with new stock for future use. Clean the content items as well and organize then back in the cabinet. You can also use water and vinegar solution, spray on the cabinet doors and surfaces to wipe any grease.
OVEN
Oven is used for baking. So if you are enthusiastic about baking and frequently use the oven then you should probably clean it more often than normal. Since oven is a closed space it can accumulate bad smell from previously cooked food. However there is nothing to worry about as you can do a proper clean of your oven with your household items. Use a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to remove all the stains and burn marks. Vinegar and baking soda are reactive to each other and this is the reason that together they make an amazing cleaning agent. Spread the mixture around the surfaces inside your oven and let it rest for sometime. Then easily wipe clean the surface with no effort. When all done, you will have a clean and tidy brand new looking oven.
REFRIGERATOR
You must clean up your refrigerator every month. Overtime your fridge accumulates odor from fruits and vegetables which sometimes turn bad and effect other items in your fridge like bread etc. To clean your refrigerator, turn it off and take out everything. Use a damp cloth to wipe around inside out. Once done keep the doors open and let it dry from inside. Meanwhile throw away any rotten or expired items. Refill the fridge back and turn it back on.
BATHROOM
SHOWER OR BATHTUB
You should clean your showers and bathtubs every week. Since mold and algae breed in a damp environment. Showers and bathtubs are the perfect for them. Make sure to thoroughly clean the tiles and grout. There are many different cleaners available in the market you can use any of them you like. You can also use bleach. Bleach is a very strong chemical so it should be mixed with water when applied. The ratio would be 2:1 (water:bleach). If using bleach make sure to use protective gloves and keep it away from your clothes as the bleach destroys the color of fabric when come in contact.
TOILET
It depends on how often you use your toilet, still you should clean it thoroughly every week at least. Use a brush and a toilet cleaner for the purpose. Also use the bleach solution as mentioned above for the toilet seat, flush tank and handle and any tough stains that still remain. Wash it with running water and you are good to go.
BEDROOM
BEDDING
Majority of people don’t know that human body is continually shedding dead skin every day. This dead skin adds into the dust in our homes. Since we sleep in our beds we must regularly change and wash our pillow covers, blankets and bed sheets. As there are insect like pests called the dust mites that feed on dead skin.
For a thorough clean up wash your pillows every month and get your mattress steam cleaned at least once a year.
CLOSET
Empty your closet and wipe the insides with a cloth using any antibacterial solution. This will kill all the germs and repel any insects or pest. Now de-clutter your stuff. There always is something to discard and some to donate. Once you are done, put all the stuff back in an organized manner. For a wooden closet you can use a wood polish spray to make the surface look shiny and new.
LIVING AND DRAWING ROOMS
LIGHT FIXTURES AND FANS
Fans and light fixtures accumulate dust over time. It is an easy task to do. You can use a feather duster on your fan and wipe it off with a damp cloth. For the light fixtures use a soft micro fiber cloth and wipe all the dirt.
COUCH
Vacuum is the best regular cleaning solution for a sofa set with a breathable fabric. It takes care of all the dirt and dead skin. If you have pets then couch cleaning is needed to be done more frequently. Clean off any stains and spills on the fabric and machine wash the covers of your cushions and throw pillows for a safe and allergy free couch.
TABLES AND CHAIRS
You can easily clean dust off your coffee table and dining table by using a clean cloth and some sprays of a cleaning agent. The actual cleanliness lies in properly organizing the content in a proper manner.
CURTAINS
Curtains are not washed on a regular basis. All you need to do on a regular basis is to wipe and cleanse the dust off your curtain. However it is recommended to give your curtains a machine wash every 2-3 months. Freshly washed curtains will give your room a clean and fragrant feel.
DEEP CLEANING OTHER PARTS OF YOUR HOME
DOORS AND WINDOWS
Doors and windows are the most prominent elements in your home. Before you enter a room you face a door. If your door is light colored then it must have accumulated stains and other marks over time. Similarly window rails accumulate a great amount of dust in short time. The reason is that they face the outdoors of your home. That is why this is very important to take care of. Wash down your windows and clean their screens on a regular basis. Wipe down the doors in your home with a soft cloth and a cleaning agent. Do not forget to sanitize the handles and the knobs.
FLOORING
Flooring should be wiped every day. Wiping the floor with a dry duster and then using a wet mop will give perfect results. If you have carpet in place than you should use a vacuum cleaner to suck all the dirt and make it clean. For any tough stains use a detergent to rub and wipe it clean. It is recommended to dry clean your carpets by a professional once a year.
